Chréa National Park — Cedar Forests & Barbary Macaques

Chréa National Park, perched at 1,500 m in the Atlas Mountains above Blida, is Algeria's most accessible highland retreat — dense cedar forests, winter skiing, and wild Barbary macaques.

Overview

Chréa National Park (Parc National de Chréa) covers approximately 26,000 hectares of the Tell Atlas above Blida province. At its heart sits the village of Chréa at 1,500 metres, the highest settlement in northern Algeria accessible by paved road. The park was designated in 1983 and protects one of the last significant stands of Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica) in Algeria.

Getting There

From Blida city centre, follow the winding mountain road south — about 30 km, roughly 45 minutes by car. Shared taxis (louages) depart from Blida's taxi rank toward Chréa on weekends. The road climbs sharply through oak and pine forest, with regular hairpin bends — the views over the Mitidja plain from the higher sections are spectacular.

The Cedar Forest

The cedar forest is the park's crown jewel. Old-growth Cedrus atlantica trees, some over 200 years old, create a cathedral-like canopy. In autumn the forest glows amber and gold; in spring it smells of resin and wildflowers. The park also harbours:

  • Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis)
  • Holm oak (Quercus ilex)
  • Strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo)
  • Wild orchids in spring

The Barbary Macaques

Chréa's most famous residents are its semi-habituated troop of Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus), the only wild primate in Africa north of the Sahara (apart from humans). They congregate near the car parks and along the main road, accepting food from visitors — though wildlife rangers now discourage feeding to protect their natural foraging behaviour.

The macaques live in social troops of 15–40 individuals. The best time to observe them is early morning, before day-trippers arrive.

Hiking Trails

| Trail | Distance | Difficulty | Highlights | |-------|----------|------------|------------| | Sentier des Singes | 3 km loop | Easy | Macaque habitat, cedar groves | | Summit Ridge Trail | 8 km | Moderate | Panoramic Atlas views | | Gorge de la Chiffa descent | 12 km | Hard | Canyon, waterfalls, rare raptors |

Winter: The Ski Station

Between December and March, Chréa transforms into Algeria's most popular ski resort. The ski station offers a single chairlift, two runs (beginner and intermediate), ski rental, and a warming café. Snowfall is reliable most years, drawing weekend crowds from Algiers and Blida. It's rustic and unpretentious — very much a local institution rather than a polished resort.

Practical Information
