Souhila Bel Bahar was born in Blida in 1934 and became one of the most quietly remarkable figures in Algerian visual art — an entirely self-taught painter who found her voice later in life and never stopped speaking through it.

A Late but Lasting Debut

Having received no formal artistic training, Souhila developed her craft through observation, intuition, and relentless practice. She held her first exhibition in 1971 at the age of 37 — a beginning that many would have considered belated, but which she made entirely her own.

A Career of Exhibitions

Her work earned recognition at the highest levels of Algerian cultural institutions:

  • Multiple solo and group exhibitions in Algiers
  • Exhibition at the Algerian Cultural Centre in Paris (1986) — bringing her work to an international audience
  • Exhibition at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Algiers (1984)
  • A major retrospective organized by the National Museum of Fine Arts in 2008

Recognition

In 2018, Algeria's Culture Minister awarded her the National Order of Merit — a formal recognition of a lifetime's artistic contribution to Algerian culture.

Her daughter published a biography titled "Il pleut des jasmins sur Alger" (It Rains Jasmine on Algiers) in 2016, preserving both her story and the spirit of her work.

Legacy

Souhila Bel Bahar passed away on 23 March 2023, aged 89. She represents the extraordinary power of self-determination in art — proof that talent, patience, and love for one's craft need no institutional validation to flourish.
