
Iskander Bachir — Student Martyr of the Algerian Revolution
Iskander Bachir was born on 12 November 1935 in Algiers and raised in Blida. An outstanding student and activist in the General Union of Algerian Students, he joined the National Liberation Army in 1956 and was killed in combat in 1957 at Sidi Ali Bounab.

Iskander Bachir was born on 12 November 1935 in Algiers to Mohamed and Kbour Oum El Hassan. His family relocated to Blida during his childhood, and the city became his home.
Academic Excellence
Iskander attended Boubrit School and then Dufrieh Secondary School in Blida, where he excelled in natural sciences and mathematics during the 1955–1956 academic year. He was a standout student with a promising academic future.
Student Activism
He was an active member of the General Union of Algerian Students (UGEA) in Blida. On 19 May 1956, he participated in the historic student strike that saw thousands of Algerian students abandon their studies to join the independence movement — a pivotal act of collective resistance.
Joining the Armed Struggle
Following the student strike, Iskander Bachir joined the National Liberation Army (ALN), trading the classroom for the battlefield in support of Algeria's revolution.
Martyrdom
He was killed in 1957 during a combat engagement with enemy forces at Sidi Ali Bounab in Cherchell, west of Algiers.
Legacy
Iskander Bachir School on Chrea Road in Blida was named in his honor — a fitting tribute to a young scholar who chose his country over his career.
