He went on to become one of the most influential figures in Algerian contemporary visual art — a painter, ceramicist, performance artist, and teacher whose work has left a permanent mark on the cultural landscape of North Africa and beyond.
Education and Early Career
Martinez studied at the School of Fine Arts in Algiers and in Paris, developing a deep foundation in both classical technique and avant-garde aesthetics. In 1963, he joined the faculty of the Algiers School of Fine Arts as a professor, beginning what would become decades of influence over multiple generations of Algerian artists.
The Aouchem Collective
In the late 1960s, Martinez co-founded the Aouchem artistic collective — a groundbreaking group that sought to create an authentically Algerian visual language by drawing on Amazigh (Berber) symbols, ancient rock art, and contemporary abstraction. Aouchem became a landmark movement in Algerian modernism.
