Overview
The Ouled Yaïch massacre took place on 17 September 1956 in Ouled Yaïch, a commune south of Blida. French forces killed unarmed civilians in an act of collective repression during the Algerian War of Independence (1954–1962). The event became emblematic of the systematic violence used by colonial authorities against the civilian population of the Blida region.
Context: Blida During the War of Independence
The Blida wilaya was one of the most militarily contested zones during the Algerian War. The city's proximity to the Atlas mountains — which provided shelter and supply routes for ALN (Armée de Libération Nationale) fighters — made it a focal point for French counter-insurgency operations.
The Blida wilaya was part of Wilaya IV (the Algiers wilaya of the FLN), and the mountains of Chréa and the Mitidja plain were active theatres of guerrilla warfare.
