Overview

Nedjma (نجمة — "the Star") is one of Blida's four Andalusian classical music associations. The name nedjma carries cultural resonance that extends well beyond music: it is also the title of Kateb Yacine's 1956 novel — considered one of the founding works of Algerian francophone literature and one of the greatest Arabic-world novels of the 20th century.

The Name Nedjma

Nedjma — "star" — is a name with deep roots in Arabic poetry and music. Stars are among the most frequently invoked images in Andalusian classical poetry (muwashshah and zajal), where they serve as symbols of beauty, guidance, and unattainable longing. The name thus connects the association directly to the poetic tradition it seeks to preserve.

The shared name with Kateb Yacine's novel is likely intentional — both the novel and the association locate themselves in the tradition of Algerian cultural identity formation in the mid-20th century.
